"Old Mud Church"

Union Church and burial ground on East Presqueisle Street in Philipsburg are landmarks
associated with the early history of Philipsburg borough, founded in 1797.

The church, also known as "Old Mud Church," was built as a one-story log structure in 1820.
It was remodeled and enlarged in 1842, and is essentially unchanged since that time. The
church's common name comes from its roughcast exterior, a plaster-clay mixture.
